The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
