Prime Small Screen Choices: 7 Can't-Miss Movies This Coming Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary tackles the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the dreaded aspects of ageing. The veteran actress delivers an inspired acting turn as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity reduced to presenting a fitness program on television. Forced aside thanks to her deceitful superior her manager Harvey, she seeks out a secretive and horrifying procedure known as this experimental method. This creates a youthful duplicate named Sue, resulting in a steadily more parasitic dynamic between them. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This suspenseful story stars Knightley in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take a break from covering international wars to embark on a luxury cruise with a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and donor, her spouse, as well as other extremely wealthy individuals. Yet once a mysterious woman disappears from the ship overnight and everyone denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Available now, on Netflix

Presence

Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries with this nifty supernatural story shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the ghostly being, and it looks like defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist you might not see coming. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Cage embraces his unique fame in this meta comedy caper. He portrays an egotistical film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for the rich superfan Javi. Recruited by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, his unconventional method comes in handy. October 11th, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone Horror

The director's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has left the children frightened. When Finney is kidnapped by the villain and locked up in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. But the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. An effective horror. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced televangelist and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence monetising the people's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, overdone appearance and bad faith, though Jessica Chastain achieves to present the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, early morning, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

The current week's another release from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as sharp like the turtlenecks worn by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission to identify a traitor among the team from five suspects – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars are masters of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mental battle of truth or lie develops. Additional actors take part the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, various showings, the Sky channel
