Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
