Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
