The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
